Top U.S. officials are urging China to move faster in opening its markets and broadening currency reforms.
U.S. Treasury Secretary John Snow told reporters in Beijing today (Monday) that while he is confident China is working to allow more flexibility in its economic policies, the U.S. Congress will need to see movement on revaluing China's currency if China is to avoid trade sanctions. Critics say Beijing manipulates its currency to boost Chinese exports.
Mr. Snow and U.S. Federal Reserve (central bank) chairman Alan Greenspan led the U.S side at the annual economic talks near Beijing. U.S. officials focused on opening China's booming economy to foreign investment and reducing China's growing trade surplus with the United States.
There was no immediate comment from the Chinese side on the talks.
