당국은 헬리콥터를 이용해 지난 8일 강도 7.6의 지진으로 촉발된 산사태 때문에 도로가 막혀 접근이 불가능한 도시와 마을들에 구호품을 공수해 왔습니다.
군 호송대는 앞서 수 십 만 명의 주민들이 노천에서 이틀 밤을 지내고 있는 파키스탄령 카슈미르의 수도 무자파라바드를 포함해 폐허로 변한 여러 도시들에 구호품을 수송했습니다.
파키스탄 정부의 공식 사망자 수는 2만 여명에 달하고 있습니다. 그러나 구조 활동에 관계하는 한 고위 군 관리는 AP통신에 사망자 수가 3만 5천에서 4만 명에 이를 것으로 추산하고 있다고 밝혔습니다.
국경 너머 인도령 카슈미르에서 관리들은 이 지역 내 사망자 수가 천 3백 명을 넘어 섰으며 이 수치가 더욱 증가할 수 있다고 말하고 있습니다.
인도 군이 구호와 구조 활동 그리고 외딴 마을들에 있는 생존자들에 대한 구호품 보급을 주도하고 있습니다.

Pakistani authorities have temporarily suspended helicopter relief operations to earthquake-hit areas north of Islamabad because of torrential rains.
Helicopters were ferrying supplies to towns and villages that are inaccessible by road because of landslides triggered by Saturday's 7.6 magnitude earthquake.
Earlier, army convoys carried supplies to several devastated cities, including Muzaffarabad in Pakistani Kashmir, where hundreds of thousands of survivors have spent the past two nights in the open.
The government's official death toll remains at slightly over 20,000 people. But a senior army official close to the rescue operations told the Associated Press that, according to their estimates, the death toll is between 35,000 and 40,000 people.
Across the line of control, in Indian Kashmir, officials say the quake death toll has surpassed 1,300 people, and could rise further. India's military is leading rescue operations and the distribution of supplies to remote villages.
