Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian's popularity rating has dropped to a record-low 25 percent in the wake of a major bribery scandal.
A United Daily News telephone poll conducted Friday and Saturday shows that 54 percent of people who responded said they were displeased with Mr. Chen's administration.
A poll by the pro-opposition newspaper late last year showed the president with an approval rating of 34 percent. The survey was taken shortly after his political party suffered a serious political setback in the December parliamentary election.
The latest crisis for the Chen administration involves allegations of bribes paid to government officials in a mass transit project under way in Taiwan's second-largest city, Kaohsiung.
Frank Hsieh was mayor of Kaohsiung when the project began, but left the job after President Chen picked him to be Taiwan's prime minister.
Mr. Chen told reporters Saturday he trusts Mr. Hsieh, but the president has agreed to have an independent panel to look into the bribery allegations.
