Hurricane Ophelia is gathering strength as it slowly moves towards the southeastern U.S. coast, with the center of the storm expected to make landfall on Thursday.
The minimal (Category One) hurricane is located off the Carolinas. Forecasters say it is moving at only 10 kilometers an hour and is carrying maximum sustained winds of 130 kilometers per hour.
Ophelia is expected to dump several centimeters of rain and trigger serious flooding and power outages in the coastal areas of North Carolina.
The governor of South Carolina (Mark Sanford) has issued a voluntary evacuation order for oceanfront and riverfront areas, while the governors of Virginia and North Carolina have declared states of emergency in preparation for the storm.
