Voter turnout for Egypt's first competitive presidential election appears low, and allegations of voting irregularities threaten to overshadow the election.
At a news conference (today/Wednesday), presidential candidate Ayman Nour accused President Hosni Mubarak's ruling National Democratic Party of undermining the election process by buying votes and committing other fraud.
Western news agencies reported instances of pressure, intimidation or incentives at polling stations across the country.
Egypt refused to allow international monitors to observe the vote, and only allowed local monitors into polling stations two hours after voting began.
Some 32 million Egyptians are registered to vote, but turnout appeared low throughout the day.
President Mubarak, who is widely expected to win a fifth term, is being challenged by nine other candidates. Only two of them -- Ayman Nour (Tomorrow Party) and Noman Gomaa (Wafd Party) -- are expected to win many votes.
