조지 부쉬 대통령은 대법관으로 지명한 존 로버츠 항소 법원 판사를 3일에 타계한 윌리암 렌키스트 대법원장의 후임으로 임명했습니다.
부쉬 대통령은 5일 백악관에서 이같이 발표하고, 로버츠 판사는 지도자로서의 천부적인 자질과 타인에 대한 선의와 품위로 정평을 받고 있는 인물이라고 말했습니다.
로버츠 판사는 당초 은퇴하는 샌드라 데이 오코너 대법관의 후임으로 지명된 바 있습니다.
부쉬 대통령은 로버츠 판사가 한때 고 렌키스트 대법원장의 법률 조수로 일한바 있음을 지적하고, 렌키스트 대법원장의 후임은 그의 “헌법에 대한 깊은 존중심”을 공유하는 인물이 돼야한다고 말했습니다.
부쉬 대통령은 상원이 로버츠 지명자에 대한 인준 청문회를 마치고 오는 10월 대법원의 새 회기가 시작될때까지 그를 인준할수있을 것으로 자신한다고 말했습니다.

President Bush has nominated appeals court judge John Roberts to be the next chief justice of the United States.
Speaking at the White House today (Monday), Mr. Bush said Judge Roberts has natural gifts as a leader and a reputation for good will and decency toward others.
The chief justice position came open late Saturday when Justice William Rehnquist died at the age of 80 after battling thyroid cancer.
Mr. Bush had previously nominated Mr. Roberts to fill the Supreme Court vacancy of retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. He will now put forward another nominee for that vacancy.
The president noted Judge Roberts once served as a law clerk for the late Chief Justice Rehnquist, and said Mr. Rehnquist should be replaced a man who shares his "deep reverence for the Constitution."
President Bush said he is confident the Senate can finish hearings on Mr. Roberts and confirm him by the time the Supreme Court reconvenes in October.
