Former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced his candidacy for the leadership of the ruling Likud Party, in a direct challenge to Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.
Speaking to supporters today (Tuesday) in Tel Aviv, Mr. Netanyahu said he intends to "lead the party to victory in the upcoming elections and form the next government."
Israel's next election is scheduled for November 2006, but could be called earlier if Mr. Sharon is ousted as Likud's leader.
In a television interview Monday, Mr. Sharon dismissed his opponent, saying he possesses neither the "judgment or nerves of steel" needed to run Israel.
Mr. Netanyahu resigned as Mr. Sharon's finance minister three weeks ago to protest the Sharon-initiated withdrawal from 25 Jewish settlements in Gaza and the West Bank. From 1996 to 1999 Mr. Netanyahu was prime minister.
