시속 280킬로미터의 폭풍을 동반했던 초대형 허리케인 카트리나는 미국 내륙으로 북상하면서 위력이 떨어지고 있지만 멕시코만 주변의 여러 개 주에 커다란 피해를 입혔습니다.
미국 국립기상대는 카트리나를 2급 허리케인으로 격하시켰지만 풍속은 아직도 시속 170킬로미터로 여전히 강력한 상탭니다.
당국이 피해 상황을 파악하기 시작한 가운데 국립기상대는 허리케인 카트리나가 미국남부도시 뉴올리언스와 미시시피주에 엄청난 피해를 입혔다고 밝혔습니다.
허리케인이 강타한 지역은 폭풍과 홍수 피해를 입었고 수 십 만명은 정전사태를 겪고 있습니다.
지난 주 미국남부 플로리다주에서는 허리케인 카트리나로 최소한 여섯 명이 사망했습니다.

Hurricane Katrina is weakening as it moves north, but leaves a wide trail of damage in several U.S. states on the Gulf of Mexico.
The National Weather Service has downgraded Katrina to a category two hurricane, still packing winds of 170 kilometers per hour.
Officials are just beginning to assess its effects. The weather service says Katrina caused "extensive damage" in (the city of) New Orleans and "extreme damage" in coastal areas (of the state) of Mississippi.
Video from New Orleans shows streets covered with debris and ankle-deep water. Higher flooding is reported on the city's east side.
Heavy flooding is also reported in Biloxi and Gulfport, Mississippi, where witnesses say sailboats have been washed ashore. Hundreds of thousands of people across the region are without power.
Katrina made landfall for the second time today (Monday). Last week it hit the southern U.S. state of Florida, where it is blamed for at least seven deaths.
The storm gained strength as it tracked through the Gulf of Mexico, coming ashore today as one of the most powerful hurricanes to hit the United States.
