아프가니스탄 서부지역에서 북대서양 조약 기구 나토군 헬리콥터가 추락해 스페인 병사 17명이 사망했습니다.
관리들은 2번째 헬리콥터 역시 비상 착륙을 하면서 일부 병사들이 부상한 것으로 믿어진다고 말했습니다.
헤라트 근처의 사고 현장에서 현재 구조대원들이 부상자 구조와 시신 수습 작업을 벌이고 있습니다.
스페인의 호세 보노 국방장관은 헬기 추락이 단순 사고일 수 있다고 밝혔으나 외부로 부터의 공격 가능성도 배제하지는 않고 있다고 말했습니다.
그러나 현지 보안을 담당하고 있는 아프간 정보 관리들은 두 대의 헬리콥터가 지나치게 근접해서 비행하면서 회전 날개가 서로 충돌했다고 말했습니다.
관리들은 사고 헬리콥터들이 다음달 국회의원 선거를 지원하기 위한 훈련 임무 중이었다고 말했습니다.

A helicopter belonging to the NATO-led international security force in Afghanistan has crashed in the west of the country, killing 17 Spanish troops. Officials say a second helicopter also made an emergency landing and an unspecified number of troops on board were believed to be wounded.
Officials in Afghanistan and Spain say the cause of the crash and the emergency landing do not appear to be related to enemy-fire and could be the result of mechanical failure. But an Afghan intelligence official said the two choppers came too close together while flying and the rotor blade of one hit the other.
Rescuers are on the site, recovering the dead and wounded. Officials say both choppers were on a training mission to support legislative elections next month.
