인도네시아 밀림 지역의 대형 화재가 진압되지 못하고 있는 가운데 인접국인 말레이시아에 질식할 듯한 연무현상이 초래되면서 시민들이 열흘째 고통을 겪게 되자 말레이시아 인들이 12일 기도회와 시위를 가졌습니다.
압둘라 아흐마드 말레이시아 총리는 모든 종교인들에게 신의 도움과 인체에 해로운 오염된 연기와 연무를 제거하기 위해 비를 내려달라고 신께 기도할 것을 촉구했습니다.
연무가 가장 극심한 말레이시아 서부의 일부 지역과 말레이시아 최대 항구인 포트 클랑에는 비상 경계령이 내려졌습니다.
인도네시아 수마트라섬의 화재로 인해 말레이지아로 이동한 연무로 인해 많은 호흡기 이상 문제들이 발생하고 있습니다.

Malaysians turned to prayer and protest today (Friday), the 10th day they have suffered through a choking haze caused by forest fires burning out of control in neighboring Indonesia.
Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi urged people of all faiths to pray for God's help, and for rain to dispel the dangerously polluted smoke and smog.
A state of emergency is in effect in parts of Malaysia's west coast where the pollution is worst, and Port Klang, the country's biggest and busiest harbor, has been closed. Many respiratory problems have been caused by the haze, which is largely due to fires that were set deliberately to clear land on Sumatra ( -- just across the Malacca Strait from western Malaysia).
Protesters in Kuala Lumpur (the capital) are demanding compensation. They recall that similar fires in recent years (in 1997 and 1998) caused billions of dollars in economic losses (in Malaysia and Singapore).
