타이완은 타이완의 열 세 번째 유엔 가입을 위한 운동을 전개하고 있습니다. 타이완 관계관들은 12일, 유엔이 타이완을 회원국으로 받아들일 것과 타이완과 본토 중국간의 평화 유지를 위해 지원하도록 촉구했습니다.
유엔 안전보장 이사회의 거부권을 가진 중국의 외교관들은 지금까지 타이완의 유엔 가입을 위한 시도를 지금까지 모두 봉쇄해 왔습니다. 중국은 타이완이 중국 영토의 일부이므로 중국 정부의 통제하에 귀속돼야 한다고 주장하며 필요할 경우 무역으로 통일시킬 것이라고 위협하고 있습니다.
타이완은 국민당 집권하에 1971년까지 유엔 회원국이자 안보리 상임이사국이었으나 공산당 정부의 본토중국이 유엔에 가입하면서 유엔 회원국 자격을 박탈당했습니다.

Taiwan has launched its 13th bid to join the United Nations. Officials on the island today (Friday) urged the international body to grant it membership and asked the U.N. to help keep peace in the Taiwan straits.
China says Taiwan is a province of China that should be returned to central government control -- by force if necessary.
China is a powerful member of the U.N. Security Council with veto power, and Beijing's diplomats have managed to stop Taiwan's previous efforts to join the U.N.
Taiwan's participation in the United Nations has been an issue since 1949, when Communist forces won the Chinese civil war and the Nationalist government retreated to the island.
The Nationalist government spoke for China in the United Nations until 1971, when the seat was given to the Communist government in Beijing.
