Russia's Pacific Fleet commander says the seven-man crew trapped in a small submarine on the ocean floor has enough air to last until Monday.
Admiral Viktor Fyodorov's remark contradicts earlier statements by other Russian naval officials who said the submarine had only 24 hours of air left. The sub is stuck nearly 200 meters undersea off the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia's far east.
The U.S. military says a Navy (C-5) transport plane will airlift a submersible vehicle to the site, a flight that is expected to take about 12 hours. Russia, Japan and Britain also are sending emergency equipment.
Russian officials say the deep-sea observation vessel became tangled Thursday in a fishing net on the seabed (about 75 kilometers from the port of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky).
It is not clear when officials first knew of the accident, which comes nearly five years after a Russian nuclear submarine (the Kursk) sank in the Barents Sea following an explosion. All 118 men on board that sub died.
Russian President Vladimir Putin was criticized for not immediately asking for international help after the August 2000 accident.
