A moderately strong earthquake shook parts of Japan near Tokyo today (Saturday), causing buildings to sway and slighting injuring at least five people.
The quake caused minor damage to at least one building in the Japanese capital, and Kyodo news agency reports that five people were injured at a shopping center in Saitama, north of Tokyo.
The U.S. National Earthquake Information Center measured the quake at 6.1 magnitude. Because it occurred inland, Japan's Meteorological Agency says the jolt did not cause any tsunamis.
Haneda and Narita airports temporarily closed their runways to check for damage. And some Japanese bullet-train services were halted as a precaution following the earthquake, which struck at 4:35 pm (0735 UTC) in Chiba prefecture.
A magnitude six quake can damage to poorly-constructed buildings within a 10 kilometer radius.
