President Bush says he will not choose a candidate for the Supreme Court based on the nominee's position on specific issues like abortion or gay rights.
Before leaving Copenhagen for the G-8 summit today (Wednesday), Mr. Bush repeated his stance that there will not be a so-called "litmus test" for his nominees.
The president is looking for a candidate to replace Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, who announced her retirement last week.
Mr. Bush said the Senate, which must approve any appointment, should ignore intense pressure from both conservative and liberal interest groups when the chamber reviews the nominee. He also defended his attorney general, Alberto Gonzales, who has been mentioned as a possible nominee.
Some conservatives have launched a campaign against Mr. Gonzales, saying he is too moderate for the Supreme Court post.
Also today, the White House said President Bush has named Hollywood actor and former Republican Senator Fred Thompson (of Tennessee) to oversee the nomination process.
