프랑스 정부는 결혼한 부부 사이에서 태어난 어린이와 혼인 관계와는 무관하게 태어난 어린이를 구분하던 ‘적자’와 ‘사생아’라는 용어의 사용을 폐지했습니다.
이같은 법안이 7일 늦게 통과됨으로써, 당초 2백년 전에 나폴레옹 법전에서 부터 쓰이기 시작했던 그같은 용어가 사라지게 됐습니다. 이에 따라 결혼하지 않은 여성들과 그들의 자녀들 간의 관계가 자동적으로 법적인 인정을 받게 됐습니다.
그러나, 결혼하지 않은 남성들은 여전히 자신들이 자신의 자녀의 아버지라는 사실을 공식적으로 인정 받아야만 합니다.
프랑스 당국자들은 지난 해 프랑스에서 태어난 어린이들 가운데 약 절반이 혼인관계와 무관하게 태어난 어린이들이라고 밝혔습니다. 지난 1980년에는 그 비율이 약 10퍼센트에 불과했습니다.

The French government has abolished the use of the terms "legitimate" and "illegitimate" when used in reference to children born in or out of wedlock. The measure was passed late Monday and abolishes terms originally established two centuries ago in the Napoleonic Code.
The ruling allows the relationship between unmarried women and their children to be automatically recognized. Unmarried fathers must still officially acknowledge the fatherhood of their children.
Officials say nearly half of all children born in France last year were born out of wedlock. In 1980, the figure was closer to 10 percent.
