The U.S. Senate has approved a bill that would provide funding to study the feasibility of a bunker-busting nuclear bomb the Bush administration is considering.
By a vote of 53-43, the Senate early today (Friday) voted for a provision in an energy bill to fund the study.
Critics say it sends the wrong message at a time Washington is trying to stop other countries from expanding nuclear programs.
Proponents of the study say it is the only way to find out if it is possible to design a nuclear weapon that would penetrate reinforced underground targets while not endangering other areas.
The House of Representatives' version of the energy bill does not include spending on the bunker-buster (officially called the Robust Nuclear Earth Penetrator).Senate and House negotiators will discuss a final version of the bil.
