아시아 국가들과 전 세계인들이 정확히 6개월 전 인도양 일대를 황폐화시킨 재앙같았던 지진 해일, 쓰나미를 상기하고 있습니다.
지난 해 12월 26일 엄청난 지진이 수마트라 연안의 해저를 융기시켰다가 다시 엄청난 힘으로 이를 갈아앉히는 바람에 인도네시아 아체 성 전역이 대대적으로 파괴되고, 거대한 파도가 생겨 무서운 속도로 대해의 수천 킬로미터까지 밀려갔습니다.
이로 인해, 태국과 스리랑카, 인도의 해안 거주지들이 경고의 틈도 없이 파괴됐고, 17만 5천명 이상의 사망자와 근 200만명의 이재민이 났습니다. 최악의 재한 피해와 최대의 인명 피해를 낸 인도네시아는 25일 이 쓰나미 발생 반년을 맞아 이를 상기하는 행사를 가졌습니다.
13만 천명이 사망하고 50만명의 이재민을 낸 아체성 성도인 반다 아체 근교의 한 회교 사원에는 이날 생존자들과 구호 요원 및 현지 관리들이 집회를 가졌습니다. 아체에서는 구호 지원이 쏟아졌음에도 불구하고, 피해 복구와 재건 노력이 서서히 시작됐습니다. 그러나 인도네시아 주재 유엔 고위 관계관은 이제 이같은 노력이 가속화 되고 있다고 말했습니다.

The nations of Asia and people around the world are recalling the catastrophic tsunami that devastated the Indian Ocean basin exactly six months ago.
An enormous earthquake lifted the ocean floor off the (northwest) coast of Sumatra on December 26 and slammed it down again with deadly force, wreaking havoc across Indonesia's Aceh province and triggering ocean waves that traveled at high speed across thousands of kilometers of open water.
Seaside communities in Thailand, Sri Lanka and India were wrecked before any warning was sounded, and the tsunami was felt as far away as the east coast of Africa. The disaster claimed more than 175,000 lives and left nearly 2 million people homeless.
Indonesia, which suffered the worst damage and heaviest casualties, held a ceremony Saturday to mark the half year that has passed since the earthquake and tsunami ( -- called by some the "six-month anniversary" of the disaster).
Survivors, aid workers and local officials gathered outside a mosque near Banda Aceh, Aceh's capital, where 131,000 people died and a half-million lost their homes. Despite an outpouring of relief assistance, recovery and reconstruction efforts began slowly in Aceh, but the United Nations' top official in Indonesia (Bo Asplund) says the work is now picking up speed.
