World War Two veterans, families and dignitaries gather today (Monday) in Normandy, France and at ceremonies throughout the United States, Britain and Canada to honor Allied soldiers who fought in the invasion of western Europe 61 years ago.
The D-Day assault against Nazi occupation began shortly after midnight, June 6, 1944. More than four-thousand ships and several thousand smaller boats crossed the English Channel as thousands of bombers flew overhead.
About 156-thousand men from the United States, Britain and Canada stormed the five beaches of Normandy to begin the march to Berlin, and ultimately defeat the Nazi regime. (Troops from Australia, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, France, Greece, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway and Poland also participated in the invasion.)
More than 25-hundred Allied troops were killed in the D-Day assault, with total Allied casualties approaching 10-thousand. Ceremonies at the Normandy American cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer today feature a band and choir honoring over nine-thousand U.S. fighters buried there.
