프랑스와 네델란드 국민투표에서 유럽 연합 헌법이 부결됐으나 라트비아 국회의원들은 이를 비준했습니다.
라트비아의 아이가르 칼비티즈 총리는 이 문서의 중요성을 강조하고 자신의 나라는 앞으로 남은 유럽 연합 국가들도 그대로 따르기를 바라는 하나의 모범이 되고 있다고 말했습니다.
한편 유럽 의회의 죠셉 보렐 의장, 유럽 위원회 위원인 룩셈부르그의 쟝 끌로드 준케르 총리, 유럽 위원회의 호세 마누엘 바로소 회장등 유럽 연합의 고위 지도자들은 벨기에의 브룻셀에서 프랑스와 네델란드 국민의 결정을 존중한다는 뜻을 표명했습니다.
그러나 이들은 공동성명에서 회원국들에게 제안된 헌법을 포기하지 말 것을 촉구했습니다.
네델란드 유권자들은 1일 62대 38로 유럽 헌법을 거부했으며 이보다 3일 앞서 프랑스도 이를 부결시켰습니다. 유럽 헌법이 발효되려면 25개 회원국 모두가 이를 비준해야 합니다.

Latvian lawmakers have ratified the European Union's constitution despite its overwhelming rejection by voters in referendums in France and the Netherlands. Latvian Prime Minister Aigars Kalvitis stressed the importance of the document and said his country is setting an example for remaining EU members to follow.
In Brussels, top EU leaders expressed respect for the decision of the French and Dutch voters. But in a joint statement they (European Parliament President Josep Borrel, European Council resident and Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso) urged member states not to give up on the proposed constitution.
Dutch voters rejected the constitution by a margin of 62 to 38 Wednesday, three days after voters in France also turned down the document.
All 25 EU members must ratify the pact before it takes effect..
