Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas says he believes the era of Palestinian suicide attacks against Israelis is over.
In an interview with ABC television aired Sunday, Mr. Abbas said Palestinians have stopped the "culture of violence" that supported such attacks. But Mr. Abbas warned Palestinians will "return to old ideas" if peace talks with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon do not bring progress.
Meanwhile, the Israeli cabinet approved the release of 400 Palestinian prisoners who were not involved in attacks against Israelis. Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat criticized the decision, saying Israel should have consulted the Palestinians on which prisoners to release.
