티베트의 달라이 라마, 나이지리아의 극작가 올레 소잉카, 홀로코스트 생존자 엘리 위젤등 20여명의 노벨상 수상자들은 고대도시 페트라에서 이틀동안 열린 회의에 참석했습니다. 이 자리에는 빌 클린튼 전 미국 대통령, 헐리우드 영화배우 리쳐드 기어등도 참석했습니다.
참석자들은 기아, 질병, 교육, 폭력등을 논의한 다음 19일 발표한 성명을 통해 민주제도의 강화, 경제 개발의 지원등을 강조했습니다.
이번 회의는 요르단의 압둘라 국왕과 위젤 인도 기금이 공동주최했습니다. 이들은 20일부터 요르단의 사해에서 열리는 세계 경제 포럼의 지도자들에게 자신들의 권고사항들을 제시할 계획입니다.

Nobel laureates meeting in Jordan have urged the international community to address issues of inequity and injustice, which they say are the root causes of terrorism.
More than two dozen laureates -- including the Dalai Lama, Nigerian playwright Wole Soyinka and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel -- participated in the two-day meeting in the ancient city of Petra. They were joined by among others, former President Bill Clinton and Hollywood actor and activist Richard Gere.
The participants discussed poverty, disease, education and violence, and in a statement today (Thursday), underscored the need to strengthen democratic institutions and foster economic development.
Jordan's King Abdullah and Mr. Wiesel's Foundation for Humanity co-sponsored the event. Together, they will present recommendations to leaders meeting Friday at the World Economic Forum along Jordan's Dead Sea.
