Violent anti-U.S. protests have continued for a fourth day in Afghanistan but calls for protests in neighboring Pakistan failed to draw large crowds.
Afghan officials say at least eight people were killed in today's (Friday's) protests during clashes with police. In Pakistan, Islamic parties called for massive protests, but only a few hundred demonstrators turned out in major cities.
The protests follow still unsubstantiated allegations that U.S. interrogators desecrated the Koran during interrogations at the detention facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
The U.S. military says it is looking into the allegations which were reported by Newsweek magazine, but has found no evidence the incident took place. Military officials blame the Afghan unrest on domestic political turmoil -- not the alleged desecration.
The White House today (Friday) repeated calls for calm and said it takes allegations of such religious desecration seriously.
Saudi officials and Pakistan's national assembly (today / Friday) have condemned the alleged desecration and urged a probe into the claims.
