Egyptian maritime officials say a ferry carrying at least 13 hundred mostly Egyptian passengers sank in the Red Sea. Officials say the ship "al-Salaam 98" disappeared from radar screens shortly after sailing from the port of Dubah in western Saudi Arabia late Thursday.
They say the passenger ferry was to have arrived at Egypt's southern port of Safaga early today (Friday), but did not make it there. It was not immediately clear what caused the vessel to sink. Officials say severe weather and high seas could have been a factor.
Maritime officials say four Egyptian frigates are sailing to the area to help in rescue operations. They say rescue helicopters have spotted life boats with people aboard and bodies floating in the water.
