A: Welcome to the show John.

J: Thank you for inviting me.

A: Are you a coupon collector?

J: Not anymore. I used to

A: I think it’s really time consuming. But can we agree to say that everyone loves to save money?

J: Yes, and some coupons are more valuable than others

A: I wonder who invented coupons.

J: I thought you might ask that (SFX: PAPER RATTLE)

The first coupons were given out in eighteen eighty-seven in Atlanta, Georgia. They were issued by a man who wanted to build excitement and convince customers to try a new beverage.

A: Oh, Coke! Coca-cola!

J: That’s right, an Atlanta businessman Asa Candler had a great idea in 1887 when he created the first coupon. His hand-written tickets offered consumers a free glass of Coca-Cola. Between 1894 and 1913, an estimated one out of every nine Americans had received a free Coca-Cola. By 1895, Coca-Cola was being served in every state.

A: Fascinating story.

J: In our lifetime, coupons were always printed, mostly in newspapers, but now I see more and more people use electronic coupons.

A: Let’s talk about haggling over prices. What do you say when you want to get a bargain?

J: I might say, Could you give me a discount? Or,

Could you give me a discount for cash?

Can you give me a discount? Could you give me a discount for cash?

You can take this. This is free of charge.

These are freebies. You can take one.

This is complimentary.

This is on the house.

This is provided at no extra cost.

This is on the house. This is on the house.

There’s no such thing as a free lunch. This means something may appear to be free of charge, but there is usually a hidden cost.

The "free lunch" in that saying refers to the formerly common practice in American bars of offering a "free lunch" in order to entice customers to drink expensive alcohol.

There is no such thing as a free lunch. There is no such thing as a free lunch.

You can take this. This is free of charge.

These are freebies. You can take one.

This is complimentary.

This is on the house.

This is provided at no extra cost.
