J: I going to have to tell David to dress up properly in the work place.

A: Why?

J: He’s wearing a shorts all the time.

A: Isn’t that he’s supervisor’s job to tell David what to wear in work place?

J: I guess so. But I care about David. People are talking about him behind his back.

A: Well, then when you tell him, don’t cross the line.

When you “cross the line,” you have gone too far in either your comments or your behavior.

Cross the line

A: Did you talk to David?

J: Yes. I did. He took it well. The bottom line is that he will look professional at work. And no one will said bad about him anymore.

J: David doesn’t take my phone call.

A: Read between the lines. He’s upset with you.

J: What did I do?

A: You told him to dress up.

“Reading between the lines” means you to try to understand something that is not openly communicated.

Reading between the lines

J: I going to have to tell David to dress up properly in the work place.

A: Why?

J: He’s wearing a shorts all the time.

A: Isn’t that the supervisor’s job to tell David what to wear in the work place?

J: I guess so. But I care about David. People are talking about him behind his back.

A: Well, then when you tell him, don’t cross the line.
