Today we start by asking a question: What sort of friends do you have?

The answer is probably -- all different kinds!
대답은 아마도 여러 부류의 친구들이겠죠.
So, we will talk about different expressions that we use for different kinds of friendship.
그래서 여러 다른 부류의 친구들을 가리키는 여러가지 표현들 살펴보겠습니다.

But what do you call someone who is not really a friend? You just, kind of, know them.
그러나 친구는 아닌데 조금 아는사이는 어떤 단어를 써야할까요?
Acquaintances are people you know, but not well.
Acquaintances는 그렇게 잘 알지는 못하지만 아는사이의 관계를 말합니다.
When using this word, there is often a distance between two people.
이 단어는 조금 떨어진 두사람 사이의 관계를 가리킬때 씁니다.
We often use it when we want to state that the person is not a true friend.
우리는 진짜 친구 사이가 아닌 관계일때 이 단어를 주로 씁니다.
It doesn't mean that you have bad feelings about the other person.
그 사람에 대해 나쁜 감정이 있다는 뜻은 아닙니다.
You are simply acquainted with them.
그냥 아는 지인이라는 거죠.
In other words, you know his or her name but that's about it.
다시말하면, 당신은 그 사람의 이름정도만 알고 있다는 거죠.
An acquaintance could one day be a friend if the two of you spend time together and you find that you have things in common.
acquaintance그냥 아는 사람은 만약 시간을 같이 많이 보내고 공통점을 찾는다면 어느날 친구가 될 수 도 있습니다.
A distant friend is someone you consider a friend, but not a close one.
Distant friend은 친구인데, 가까운 사이의 친구는 아닙니다.
Distant friends could also be mutual friends -- people you know through other people.
Distant friend과 mutual friend은 비슷합니다. Mutual friend은 다른 사람을 통해 아는 사람을 말 합니다.
When we don't want to use the word "mutual," Americans often just say a friend of a friend.
mutual이라는 단어를 쓰기 싫으면 mutual friend이라 하지 말고 friend of a friend친구의 친구라고 하면 됩니다.
Your childhood friends are the people you grew up with.
Childhood friend어린시절 친구는 같이 큰 친구를 말합니다.
