Taiwan's Ruling Party Critical of Opposition's Trip to China - 2005-03-31

Taiwan's ruling party has criticized a trip to Beijing by opposition Nationalist Party leaders, saying the visit gives support to China's controversial anti-secession law.

An official with the ruling Democratic Progressive Party made the comment today in Taipei.

The Nationalists say their trip is aimed at easing tensions following the Chinese parliament's approval of the controversial measure, which authorizes the use of force if Taiwan declares its independence from the mainland.

Nationalist leaders have been touring the mainland since Monday and the party's vice chairman, Chiang Pin-kung, is set to meet today (Thursday) with Chinese leaders.

On Wednesday, China and the Nationalists agreed on ten proposals to expand trade, travel and commercial ties. But the move is symbolic since the Nationalists do not have the power negotiate for Taiwan.
