Secretary of State Rice Meets Chinese Prime Minister - 2005-03-20

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has met with China's prime minister in Beijing, the final stop on her weeklong trip through Asia.

China's official Xinhua news agency says Ms. Rice and Prime Minister Wen Jiabao expressed their mutual desire to enhance China-US relations and discussed Taiwan and economic affairs.

The secretary's trip comes less than a week after China passed an anti-secession law, which Mr. Jiabao says is mean to contain forces on Taiwan seeking independence.

Ms. Rice said the United States will adhere to its one-China policy, and has said the new law is "not helpful" in reducing tensions between China and Taiwan.

Earlier today, in Seoul, Ms. Rice said the United States and South Korea are in agreement that North Korea needs to return to nuclear disarmament talks without delay. She added that the United States has no intention of invading North Korea.
