U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is in Japan on the latest leg of an Asian tour that includes an effort to restart nuclear talks with North Korea.
Ms. Rice arrived in Tokyo today (Friday) for talks with Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and other officials expected to focus on how to bring Pyongyang back to the negotiating table.
She is also expected to press Tokyo to lift a ban on American beef imports imposed in 2003 after the United States reported its first case of mad cow disease.
In Pakistan Thursday, Secretary Rice said a clandestine network run by Pakistani scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan to supply nuclear technology abroad must be completely destroyed. She said Mr. Khan represents a threat to the entire international community.
