US Seeks China's Help in Tracing Korean War Dead - 2005-02-26

The United States is pushing for more cooperation from China in the search for the remains of Americans missing in the Korean War.

Jerry Jennings, a U.S. deputy assistant secretary of defense, told reporters in Beijing today (Saturday) that Russia has helped by opening its defense files from the Korean War era, and Washington wants China to do the same.

Mr. Jennings had just traveled to the border city of Dandong to thank authorities for helping with recovery of the remains of Air Force pilot Troy Cope, who was shot down by North Korean fighter jets in 1952.

U.S. officials say Chinese cooperation is also needed to trace missing American prisoners of war believed to have been held in Chinese camps.
