300 Die in Temple Stampede in Western India - 2005-01-25

Indian officials say the death toll in a stampede near a temple in the western state of Maharashtra has risen to 300.

The officials say the victims were trampled or burnt to death and more than 80 people were injured.

Authorities say more than 300,000 people were on a pilgrimage to the popular Mandhra Devi temple, situated on a hill, southeast of Bombay, also known as Mumbai.

There was a stampede on a narrow pathway and a fire caused by a short circuit in an overhead cable. But it is not clear which came first.

Television footage showed at least one fiery explosion followed by flames and black smoke and people running frantically down the slopes.

Local officials say the cause is still being investigated.
