Powell: US Will Follow Through on Asian Disaster Aid - 2004-12-30

U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell has promised that Washington will follow through on its pledge of further Asian disaster relief.

Mr. Powell said today (Thursday) that the United States will give much more money once it determines how best to use its resources. He said Washington will focus its efforts on Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Thailand -- countries he said have the most severe needs.

Mr. Powell visited all three countries' Washington embassies today to formally extend U.S. condolences.

The United States has pledged 35-million dollars in aid so far, and has sent in military forces to deliver supplies and help with search-and-rescue efforts.

Mr. Powell said Washington is committed to both immediate relief and long-term reconstruction in the affected region.

The State Department says 14 Americans are confirmed dead in the disaster, with several thousand still not accounted for.
