A terrorist attack against U.S. coalition forces in Iraq has left at least twenty-two dead and dozens wounded. On December 21st, an explosion struck a tent filled with soldiers eating lunch at a military base near Mosul. An extremist Sunni Muslim group, the Ansar al-Sunnah Army, claimed responsibility for the attack.
Foreign terrorists and remnants of Saddam Hussein's dictatorship are stepping up their attacks against Iraqi citizens and coalition forces in an effort to disrupt Iraq's January 30th national elections. President George W. Bush says the continuing violence in Iraq has become "an effective propaganda tool." But the coalition, he said, is determined that the elections will take place.
"To help the Iraqi government provide security during the election period, we will increase U.S. troop strength. Coalition forces will continue hunting the terrorists and the insurgents. We will continue training Iraqi security forces so the Iraqi people can eventually take responsibility for their own security."
Iraq faces a critical moment in its history. As the Iraqi people move closer to governing themselves, the terrorists are becoming more active and more brutal. "It's a tough struggle with setbacks," says Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi, "but we are succeeding." Attacks such as the brutal murders in Mosul will not stop the United States or its allies from working for security and freedom for the people of Iraq. Iraq's democratic process will go forward and the terrorist killers will be defeated.
