Two Burma Dissidents Are Freed in Mass Prisoner Release - 2004-12-12

Two senior pro-democracy leaders have been freed in military-ruled Burma's latest mass prisoner release, affecting more than 5,000 detainees.

Senior Democracy Party member U Htwe Myint and party chairman U Thu Wai, both in their 70s, were released from Rangoon's notorious Insein prison today (Sunday).

There was no word whether other political detainees were among the (5,070) prisoners being freed today (at 41 jails across the country).

U Htwe Myint and U Thu Wai were jailed in 1995 for distributing anti-government pamphlets. They founded Burma's Democracy Party in 1988.

During the past month (since November 18), the Burmese junta has freed more than 14,000 prisoners and admitted they were wrongly detained in the past.
