미국은 새 유엔 대사를 임명했습니다. 조지 부쉬 대통령은 전 상원의원인 존 댄포스씨를 최근 새 이라크 대사로 전임되는 존 네그로폰테 대사 후임으로 유엔 대사에 임명했습니다.
유엔 안전보장이사회는 이라크에서 이라크 과도정부에 대한 주권 이양을 만장일치로 지지했습니다. 댄포스 신임 유엔대사는 “안전보장이사회의 이라크 주권 이양에 대한 만장일치의 결의에 따라 이제 남은 과업은 보다 광범한 국제 협력을 위한 계기를 구축해가는 것”이라고 말했습니다.
“총의와 협력을 추구하면서 유엔이 이라크에서 해야 할 일들이 많지만, 또한 테러와의 전쟁을 계속하고 대량파괴무기의 확산을 막으며, 중동지역에 평화를 가져오고, 아프리카에 안정을 가져오는데 있어서도 할 일들이 많습니다. 우리는 문명과 혼돈의 싸움에 직면하고 있습니다. 유엔 앞에 가로놓인 과업은 우리가 직면하고 있는 공동의 도전을 문명이 극복해나가도록 하는 방법을 찾는 것입니다. 그것은 유엔 대사 일을 맡게 된 저의 마음에 확고하게 자리잡은 생각입니다.”
유엔은 수행해야 할 중요한 역할이 있습니다. 부쉬 대통령은 “유엔은 불법국가에 책임을 묻고, 안정된 민주주의의 등장을 도우며, 개발을 지원하고, 침체와 비통에 대한 대안으로서 희망을 가져다 줌으로써 평화의 임무를 다해야 할 것”이라고 말했습니다.

미국은 테러와 맞서고, 테러분자들이 남겨놓고 있는 고통과 절망과 싸우기 위해 유엔과 긴밀히 협력할 것입니다. 부쉬 대통령은 미국은 “이같은 노력들을 지지”하며, 미국은 “또 더 많은 노력이 필요하다는 것”을 잘 알고 있다고 말했습니다.

The U.S. has a new ambassador to the United Nations. President George W. Bush has named former U.S. Senator John Danforth to succeed Ambassador John Negroponte, who recently assumed his duties as ambassador to Iraq.
The UN Security Council unanimously supported the transfer of sovereignty in Iraq to an Iraqi interim government. "Now," says Ambassador Danforth, "the task is to build on the momentum" towards greater international cooperation as demonstrated by the Security Council's unanimous vote on the Iraq resolution.
"By seeking consensus and working together, there is much the United Nations can do, certainly in Iraq, but also in combating terrorism, in preventing proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, in bringing peace to the Middle East and stability to Africa, among others. We face a conflict between civilization and the forces of chaos. The task before the United Nations is for civilization to find ways to pull together to meet the common challenges we face. It is with this task firmly in mind that I go to the United Nations."
The UN has a crucial role to play. President Bush says, "The UN must fulfill its mission of peace by holding outlaw states to account, by aiding the rise of stable democracies, and by encouraging development and hope as alternatives to stagnation and bitterness":
The UN is serving these great purposes in many different places. In Iraq, the UN is helping that newly sovereign nation to prepare for free and fair elections, and will help to draft a new constitution. From Africa to the Caribbean, the UN is helping to turn societies away from old conflicts, to overcome persistent poverty, to fight AIDS and other diseases."
The U.S. will work closely with the UN to confront terrorism, and to fight the suffering and despair that terrorists exploit. The U.S. "supports all of these efforts," says President Bush, and the U.S. knows "more will be necessary."
