캄보디아의 폭력사태는 급기야 한 노동 운동가의 죽음을 불렀습니다. 미 국무부의 아담 얼리 부대변인은 미국은 이같은 폭력 사태가 종식되기를 바란다고 말했습니다.

“미국은 프놈펜에서 치아 비치아 씨가 살해된 사건을 강력히 비난합니다. 치아 비치아 씨는 캄보디아의 노동권과 자유노조 운동의 기수였습니다. 이것은 또한 미국이 강력히 지지하고 있는 운동입니다. 우리는 이같은 비겁한 폭력을 개탄하며, 캄보디아 정부가 치아 비치아 씨를 살해한 범인을 법대로 처벌할 수 있도록 즉각적이고 효과적인 조치를 취할 것을 요구하는 바입니다.”
세계적인 인권단체인 [휴먼 라이츠 워치]의 사라 콤 씨는 “치아 비치아 씨는 캄보디아에서 근로자들을 위해 거침없이 말할 수 있는 가장 저명한 인사 중의 한사람이었다고 말했습니다. 그는 캄보디아에서 가장 활동적인 노조의 하나를 이끌었으며, 캄보디아의 의류 근로자들을 조직화했습니다. 비치아 씨는 야당인 삼 랑시당과 연계를 갖고 훈센 총리와 그의 집권 여당인 캄보디아 인민당을 거세게 비판했었습니다.
캄보디아 폭력사태의 또 다른 희생자들 중에는 지난해 10월에 살해된 야당 푼신펙당 라디오방송의 기자 한명도 들어있습니다. 같은 10월에 푼신펙당에 가입한 한 인기가수는 총격을 받고 부상했습니다. 미 국무부의 아담 얼리 부대변인은 캄보디아 당국은 치아 비치아 씨와 다른 희생자들의 생명을 앗아간 범인 방조 분위기를 청산해야 할 것이라고 말했습니다.
“우리는 캄보디아 당국이 범인과 그 배경을 밝혀내고, 이들을 법대로 처벌함으로써 다른 사건들도 범인들이 처벌되지 않는 일이 없도록 모든 가능한 조치들을 취해야 한다고 생각합니다.”
치아 비치아 씨의 장례식에서 정치운동가들의 연합을 대표해 민 나트 씨는 “정부는 캄보디아에서 죄를 지은 자들이 처벌받지 않는 풍조와 무정부상태와 살인행위들을 종식시켜야 한다”고 말했습니다.

Violence in Cambodia has caused the death of another prominent victim. State Department deputy spokesman Adam Ereli says the U.S. wants the violence to stop
"The United States strongly condemns the killing. . .in Phnom Penh of Mr. Chea Vichea [JEE-ah vih-JEE-ah]. . . . He was a champion of labor rights and the free trade union movement in Cambodia, and this is a movement which the United States strongly supports. We deplore this cowardly act of violence and we call upon the Cambodian Government to undertake immediate and effective action to bring the perpetrators of Chea Vichea's murder to justice."
"Chea Vichea was one of the best-known and most outspoken voices for workers in Cambodia," said Sara Colm of Human Rights Watch. He headed one of the country's most active labor unions and did much to organize Cambodia's garment workers. Vichea had close ties to the opposition Sam Rainsy [SAM RANG SEE] Party and was a vigorous critic of Prime Minister Hun Sen [HOON SEHN] and his ruling Cambodian People's Party.
Other victims of Cambodian violence include a journalist from a radio station of the opposition FUNCINPEC party killed in October. That same month, a popular singer affiliated with FUNCINPEC was shot and wounded. State Department spokesman Adam Ereli says Cambodian authorities must end the climate of impunity that took the lives of Chea Vichea and others:
"We think it's important that. . .the authorities in Cambodia take every step possible to find out who did it, why, and bring them to justice so that this, as well as other acts of violence. . .do not go unpunished."
At the funeral of Chea Vichea, Men Nath, [MIN NAHTH] representing a coalition of political activists, said, "the government must end the culture of impunity and the anarchy and killing in Cambodia."
