조지 부쉬 미국 대통령은 이제 미국이 자유의 축복에 대해 감사하고, 기본적인 이상과 신념을 다시 봉헌하게 된 데 대해 감사해야 할 때라고 말했습니다.

“자유의 성공 여부는 국민의 선택과 용기, 그리고 희생할 각오가 되어 있느냐에 달려 있습니다. 제 1차세계대전 때 참호 속에서, 제 2차 세계대전 때 유럽과 태평양의 전선에서, 한국과 베트남에서의 어려운 전투에서, 그리고 거의 모든 대륙에서 벌인 구원과 해방의 임무에서 미국인들은 자유를 위해 희생할 각오가 되어 있음을 충분히 보여 주었습니다.”
이것이야말로 미국인들이 이라크와 아프가니스탄, 그외 다른 여러 나라에서 평화와 안전과 자유를 가져오기 위해 노력하는 이유이기도 합니다. 부쉬 대통령은 “이것은 민주주의와 관용과 자유를 믿는 모든 사람들을 위한 사명”이라고 강조했습니다.
“인류의 번영과 사회적 활력과 기술의 진보는 그들이 자유를 얼마나 누리느냐에 따라 결정됩니다. 자유는 존귀한 것이며, 인간의 창의성을 계발하며 그 창의성은 국력과 부를 결정짓게 됩니다. 자유는 곧 인류를 위한 하나님의 계획이며, 지상에서 진보에 대한 최선의 희망입니다.”

This is the time of year when the United States gives thanks for the blessings of liberty -- a time, says President George W. Bush, for rededication to fundamental ideals and beliefs:
"We believe in open societies ordered by moral conviction. We believe in private markets, humanized by compassionate government. We believe in economies that reward effort, communities that protect the weak, and the duty of nations to respect the dignity and the rights of all. We value our own civil rights, so we stand for the human rights of others. We affirm the God-given dignity of every person, so we are moved to action by poverty and oppression and famine and disease. . . .We seek the advance of freedom and the peace that freedom brings."
"The progress of liberty," says Mr. Bush, "is a powerful trend. Yet, liberty, if not defended, can be lost":
"The success of freedom rests upon the choices and the courage of free peoples, and upon their willingness to sacrifice. In the trenches of World War One, through a two-front war in the 1940s, the difficult battles of Korea and Vietnam, and in missions of rescue and liberation on nearly every continent, Americans have amply displayed our willingness to sacrifice for liberty."
That is why the U.S. and its allies are working to bring peace, security, and liberty to Iraq, Afghanistan and other countries. "This is a mission," says President Bush, "for all who believe in democracy, tolerance, and freedom":
"The prosperity and social vitality and technological progress of a people are directly determined by the extent of their liberty. Freedom honors and unleashes human creativity -- and creativity determines the strength and wealth of nations. Liberty is both the plan of Heaven for humanity, and the best hope for progress here on Earth."
"Liberty is the direction of history," says President Bush. "Human fulfillment and excellence come in the responsible exercise of liberty. And we believe that freedom. . .is not for us alone, it is the right and the capacity of all mankind."
