미국서부, 캘리포니아주에서 범죄를 저지르고 소년원에 수감되어 있는 원생들이 무대예술 활동계획을 펼치고 있어 관심을 모으고 있습니다. 주로 10대인 이들 출연자들은 최근 캘리포니아주 말리브에서 열린 저녁 공연에 출연하기 위해 소년원에서 특별 출감되었습니다. 이에 관한 자세한 보돕니다.

드루, 마커스, 게리, 크리스, 앤드루, 알손소와 피터등 일단의 출연자들은 이구동성으로 이같은 라이브 공연이 그들에게 정직과 공동체의 중요성을 가르쳐 주고 있다고 말합니다.
마음에 떠오르는 것을 무엇이든지 그대로 연출하고, 서로가 서로의 마음을 꿰뚫어 보기 때문에 공동체의 결집력을 배운다는 것입니다. 무대에서 한 사람이 실수하면 공연 전체가 엉망이 되기 때문에 한 사람이 실수하는 것을 방관할수 없어, 서로 북돋우며, 또 서로 격려하고 밀어준다는 것입니다. 그리고 또, 용기가 필요하다는 사실을 알게 되었고 일단,무대에 서면, 최선을 다한다면서, 이들은 늘 서로 힘을 합해 더나은 공동체를 과시한다는 것입니다. 항상 한 마음으로 공연을 하게 된다는 점을 이들은 모두 강조합니다.
올해 열아홉살의 팀 페레즈 군은 이 출연진의 한 멤버입니다. 지난 해 소년원에서 수용생활을 한 페레즈 군은 크리스마스 전에 석방되었지만, 이 연말 공연에 합류하기 위해 다시 돌아왔습니다. 페레즈 군은 소년원 생활은 힘들었지만, 또 한편으로 이 수용소 생활을 통해 시를 좋아하게 되었다고 말합니다. 이제 그는 직접 시를 쓰기도 합니다.
시를 통해 많은 치유를 받았다는 것입니다. 항상 마음의 갈등이 많았으나 그럴때 마다 다른 사람에게 털어놓기 전에 우선 연필을 들고 책에 매달렸고 지금도 이런 방법으로 마음속의 갈등을 해소하기 위해 시를 써서 마음을 진정시키고 시를 통해 속마음을 표현한다는 것입니다.”
역시 열아홉살인 피터 라미레즈 군은 시를 통해 마음의 위안을 찾는 또다른 소년원 동기생입니다. 라미레즈 군은 그의 잠재력의 새로운 면을 개발하여 많은 제목의 시를 쓰고 있다고 들려줍니다.
사랑과 삶과 드라마와 온갖 것을 통해 아주 많은 것을 배우고 있다면서, 그러나 시의 대부분은 사랑이라는 범주에 속한 것이라면서 라미레즈군은 시를 쓰는 것은 자기 나이또래 다른 아이들과는 사뭇 다른 자기표현의 한 방법이라고 말합니다. 여배우인 수지 더프 양은 소년원에서 원생들을 대상으로 코디디를 가르치고 있습니다. 산드라 헤이워드 양은 글쓰기와 시를 가르치고 있습니다. 헤이워드 양은 이 원생들이 소년원에서 출소한 후 일자리를 구할 수 있도록 돕는 또다른 일을 하고 있다고 말합니다.
헤이워드 양의 현재 남편은 헤이워드 양의 아들처럼 영화제작회사를 경영하고 있습니다. 헤이워드 양은 원생들에게 일자리를 구해 주기 위해 영화계 사람들과 접촉하며 동분서주하고 있습니다. 피터 라미레즈 군은 현재 한 광고회사에서 경영 훈련을 받고 있습니다. 팀 페레즈 군은 할리우드 스튜디오에서 프로덕션 코디네이터로 일하고 있습니다.
다른 원생들은 연예계에서 일하기를 희망하고 있습니다.

A performing arts program is giving young offenders the confidence they need to stay away from crime. Mike O'Sullivan reports, the teenagers were released from detention camp for a recent evening performance in Malibu, California.
The setting was a small community theater, not far from the beachfront neighborhoods where some of Hollywood's best-known stars live. These young offenders come from a very different world. They are serving time for crimes such as selling drugs or robbery, confined in a detention camp deep in the Malibu Mountains. But tonight they are reading their poetry and performing comedy skits in a public performance. The show is called "Locked up in Malibu."
The performance is partly improvisational comedy. The free-form style entertainment is especially difficult because it's unscripted. The audience offers suggestions and performers act on them, making up the scenes as they go along.
Troupe members Drew, Marcus, Gary, Chris, Andrew, Alsonso and Peter say these live performances teach them honesty and teamwork.
(First Member) Whatever comes out of our hearts, we just act it out, and we just work together as a group because we are one together.
(Second Member) We pull each other up.
(Third member) That's what we really need out there. We can't let one person fall because once one person falls, we all fall. So we all give each other energy and bring each other back up. It's teamwork.
(Fourth Member) We need courage. We just go out there and do our best. And we all have to work together. So it's like a group effort.
(Fifth Member) Pretty much, we're all we've got, so we all have to work together.
Nineteen-year-old Tim Perez is an alumnus the group. He spent time in camp last year, was released just before Christmas, and returned to take part in this year's public performance. He says his time in camp was hard, but something good came from it: a love for poetry. Now he writes his own.
It's very therapeutic to me. A lot of times, a conflict may happen to me, and the first thing I'll do before I talk to anyone is hit the books with a pencil. And that's how I deal with a lot of things now, is express it through my writing.
Peter Ramirez, also 19, is another alumnus of juvenile camp who finds solace in poetry. He says he writes on many topics, exploring new facets of his personality.
I have pretty much everything, from love, life, expression, and drama and all that stuff, but the majority of my poetry is in the love category. And that's pretty different for a guy my age, to express himself in that way.
Actress Susie Duff teaches comedy at the juvenile camp. Sandra Heyward teaches writing and poetry. She says she has another role, helping these young men find jobs when they get out.
My thoughts are not only that these guys are very, very talented and they need to be heard, but they also need a little boost to get jobs, and that's really what I want to do. When they get out of camp, I'm looking for jobs for them, I want other people to look for jobs. I want to expose them to the community, expose their talent to the community, which is happening.
Ms. Heyward's late husband ran a film production company, as does her son, and she uses her contacts in the movie business to help some of the youngsters find jobs. Peter Ramirez is now a management trainee at an advertising agency. Tim Perez is a production coordinator for a Hollywood studio.
Others now in camp hope to find a job in the entertainment business.
(First Member) Yeah, I do. I really thing about that because it just brings the character out of you. People see the way you are. You're not trying to put a front on, but "that's me. That's who I'm going to be."
(Second Member) Some people really see that we're some sweet kids instead of gang-bangers, druggies, out there not knowing what they're doing.
(Third Member) It's a change for us. Brings us into something real new, keeps us positive, (away) from all that bad stuff.
They may not end up in movies, but Sandra Heyward says they're learning self-expression and teamwork.
