U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte attended activities in Beijing Wednesday to commemorate 30 years of diplomatic relations between China and the United States.
In remarks at the ceremonies, Negroponte said ties between Washington and Beijing have evolved into a "very broad and deep relationship" since formal ties were established in 1979.
He and Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Wang Guangya attended a table tennis match between Chinese and U.S. players. The match commemorated a historic 1971 exhibition match held between the two nations that was dubbed "ping pong diplomacy," and began the thaw in relations between the Cold War rivals.
During a later meeting, China's official Xinhua news agency says Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi told Negroponte that while relations have had their twists and turns they have moved forward on the whole.
Business ties have seen tremendous growth over the past three decades, but Washington frequently voices concerns about freedom of religion and human rights in China.
