Voters in Ghana's remote Tain district are casting ballots today (Friday) in a run-off election that could decide the country's next president.
Ghana's 229 other electoral districts held a run-off election last Sunday, handing the opposition candidate John Atta-Mills a narrow lead over ruling party candidate Nana Akufo-Addo. But Ghana's Electoral Commission says it cannot name a winner until the results come in from Tain.
Further complicating matters, the ruling National Patriotic Party says it is boycotting today's polls because of security concerns. The NPP has also sought a court order to prevent the Electoral Commission from announcing any more results -- although that case will not be decided until next week.
Election observers in Tain today (Friday) said the district was calm, with hundreds of soldiers and police deployed to keep order.
