중국의 전국인민대표대회는 지난 5월 쓰촨 성에서 대지진이 발생해 7천여 채의 학교 건물이 파괴된 것과 관련, 학교 건물들에 대한 안전 기준을 강화할 새 법안을 통과시켰다고 중국 관영 신화 통신이 보도했습니다.
신화통신은 지난 27일에 통과된 새로운 법안으로 모든 학교 건물은 같은 지역 내 일반 건물보다 높은 내진 기준을 준수해야 하고 신규 건축물 외에 기존의 건물 역시 내진 강화 조치를 의무적으로 취하도록 규정하게 될 것이라고 보도했습니다.
쓰촨성에서 강도 7.9의 지진이 발생해 수많은 학생들이 사망한 문제는 중국 정부에서 민감한 정치적 문제가 되어 왔습니다.

Chinese state media report that China's parliament has passed a law that would toughen school construction standards following the May earthquake that destroyed more than seven-thousand academic buildings.
The official Xinhua news agency says the new law, passed Saturday, will stipulate higher quake-proof construction standards for schools than for other public buildings in the same area. For existing schools, measures to reinforce them must be added.
Student deaths during the seven-point-nine Sichuan province quake have become a sensitive political issue for the government. Many elementary and secondary schools collapsed while nearby buildings withstood the tremors.
The law, which takes effect in May, will also require schools to teach children earthquake safety, and encourages individuals or organizations to alert authorities of possible quakes or unusual phenomenon.
Government officials are quoted as saying that two-point-five percent of China's primary and secondary school buildings are structurally unsound.
