아흐메드 티디아네 수아레 총리는 23일 프랑스 라디오 방송과의 인터뷰에서, 오랫동안 집권한 란사나 콩테 대통령이 월요일 사망한 이후 쿠데타가 일어났다는 보도들이 나오긴 했지만 아직 문민 정부가 정권을 장악하고 있다고 말했습니다. 수아레 총리는 특히 군인들을 비롯해 모든 기니인 들의 이해를 촉구했습니다.
하지만 이에 앞서 무사 카마라 육군 대위는 국영 방송에서 기니의 헌정이 중단됐다고 말했습니다. 카마라 대위는 "자문 위원회"가 정부를 운영할 것이라고 말했습니다.
카마라 대위는 "광범위한 부패"를 중단하기 위해 군부가 권력을 장악했다고 주장했습니다.
이 같은 쿠데타 기도설에 앞서 23일 이른 아침 콩테 대통령의 사망이 보도됐습니다. 아부바카르 솜파레 국회의장은 이 방송에서 헌법에 따라 자신을 대통령으로 추대해 줄 것을 고등법원에 촉구했으며, 이 때 기니 군 사령관이 자리를 함께 했습니다.

A military-led group in Guinea has declared a coup following the death of longtime President Lansana Conte, but the civilian government says it is still in control.
A member of the military-led group, Army Captain Moussa Camara, announced the coup attempt on state radio today (Tuesday), saying soldiers had dissolved the government and suspended the constitution. He said a "consultative council" would run the government.
But Prime Minister Ahmed Tidiane Souare told French radio (Radio France International) today that his government had not been dissolved and those behind the coup attempt had not used force. He called for understanding from all Guineans, especially the military.
Army Chief of Staff General Diarra Camara told VOA that he did not think the coup had been a success. He appealed to Guineans to follow constitutional rules for a peaceful transition of power.
The apparent coup attempt followed an early morning broadcast announcing the death Monday of President Lansana Conte.
