짐바브웨에 창궐하고 있는 콜레라에 대한 긴급 대책이 마련되지 않을 경우 감염환자 수가 현재의 3배 수준으로 늘어날 가능성이 있다고 세계보건기구가 경고했습니다.
유엔은 짐바브웨에서 콜레라로 인해 이미 1천1백 명 이상이 사망했으며 감염환자는 2만 명에 이른다고 보고했습니다.
세계보건기구는 콜레라에 대한 통제가 이루어지지 않으면 감염환자 수가 6만 명으로 늘어날 것으로 내다 봤습니다.
세계보건기구는 실제 감염환자 수도 현재 공식 보고된 수치보다 훨씬 많을 것으로 예측하고 있습니다.
세계보건기구에서 질병 통제 업무를 맡고 있는 도미니크 레그로스 박사는 콜레라 현황을 매일 점검할 수 있는 유엔 질병 통제 센터를 짐바브웨에 개설했다고 밝혔습니다.

The World Health Organization is saying that the number of cholera cases in Zimbabwe could triple if urgent action is not taken to control the disease.
The United Nations reports more than 11-hundred people have died from Cholera in Zimbabwe and more than 20-thousand cases have been reported.
But WHO officials say those numbers could soar to 60 thousand if efforts are not made to more closely monitor the disease.
They say it is likely there are already more cases than official statistics indicate.
WHO emergency disease control coordinator Dr. Dominique Legros says he helped set up a U.N. Command and control center in Zimbabwe designed to create a system to report new cholera cases on a daily basis. He says it should be operational in a few days.
Legros says such a system is crucial to controlling out breaks of the disease.
