태국 의회가 오는 15일 새 총리를 선출하기 위해 소집된다고 태국 당국이 밝혔습니다.
오늘 발표는 태국 국왕이 의회 특별회기를 요구하는 칙령을 승인한 뒤 나온 것입니다. 지난주 솜차이 옹사왓 당시 총리는 법원의 명령에 따라 총리직에서 물러나야 했습니다. 솜차이 전 총리의 집권 '국민의 힘'당과 다른 두 연립 정당은 지난해 총선거에서 부정을 저지른 사실이 인정돼 법원으로부터 해산 명령을 받았습니다.
야당인 민주당은 영국 태생으로 영국 옥스포드 대학에서 수학한 아비싯 웨짜지와 총재를 총리 후보로 지명했습니다. 민주당은 뜻을 같이 하는 다른 당과 해체된 집권 연립 정당의 이탈자들을 포함해 의회 과반수인 260석을 확보할 수 있다고 주장하고 있습니다.

Officials in Thailand say lawmakers will meet Monday, December 15th, to elect a new prime minister.
The announcement came today (Thursday) after Thailand's king approved a royal decree calling for an extraordinary session of parliament.
Last week, a Thai court ruling forced Somchai Wongsawat to step down as prime minister. His ruling People's Power Party (PPP)and two other parties were disbanded for committing electoral fraud in elections last year that brought them to power.
Both the current ruling party and the country's opposition Democrat Party claim their candidate for prime minister could win.
Democrat Party leaders have nominated British-born and Oxford University-educated leader, Abhisit Vejjajiva for prime minister.
Party members have said they can muster a parliamentary majority of 260 seats, including allied parties and defectors from the recently banned coalition government.
