올해 59살인 워씨는 베이징에서 의료 연구 회사를 운영하다 지난 2005년 당국에 체포됐습니다. 지난 2007년 워씨는 중국의 군사 기밀을 타이완에 넘긴 혐의로 사형 선고를 받았습니다.
워씨의 딸 란 첸은 워씨가 고문에 못 이겨 간첩혐의를 인정한 것이라며 그의 사면을 요구하는 국제적인 운동을 벌였습니다. 미국과 유럽연합, 국제 인권 단체들은 사형집행을 연기하라고 계속 요구해 왔습니다.
China has executed scientist and businessman Wo Weihan on charges of spying for Taiwan.
Wo's family says he was put to death today (Friday).
The 59-year-old who ran a medical research company in Beijing, was arrested in 2005.
In 2007 he was convicted and sentenced to death on charges of passing Chinese military secrets to Taiwan, a self-ruled island which China considers part of its territory. Court documents say he was passing information about China's missile systems to Taiwan and revealing the health status of a Chinese senior official.
Wo's daughter, Ran Chen, has waged an international campaign for his clemency, saying that he was tortured into admitting that he was a spy.
The United States, the European Union and international rights groups had repeatedly urged China to stay the execution.
