voters are casting ballots today (Tuesday)to decide who will succeed
president George Bush in the White House -- Republican John McCain, or Democrat
Barack Obama.
Voting is underway in most states and in Washington, D.C. Long lines are
forming at many polling stations, as officials prepare for a record turnout of
voters, who are eager to cast ballots in this historic election.
If Obama is elected, he will become the nation's first African-American
president. If McCain is chosen, he will become the oldest man elected to a
first presidential term at the age of 72. His running mate Sarah Palin would
become the country's first female vice president.
Obama leads McCain in national polls and has also benefited from early voting.
Officials say more registered Democrats than Republicans cast ballots before
the election in key states, including Florida and North Carolina, which
President Bush won in 2004.
McCain acknowledges he is behind, but is holding on to hopes of pulling off a
victory that defies the opinion polls.
