Lithuanians are going to the polls Sunday for the second round of parliamentary
elections that could increase the power of the main opposition party.
The run-off vote will decide 68 seats out of 141 in parliament.
The opposition Homeland Union party, led by former Prime Minister Andrius
Kubilius, won the most seats in the first round of elections. It is hoping to
gain enough in the run-off vote to end the long-time rule of the Social
Democratic party. But, it will need the support of other parties to form a
coalition government.
Economic concerns have been a key issue among voters. Lithuania's recent
economic boom is being threatened by global financial turmoil.
The country is also trying to figure out how to secure energy sources after the
planned shutdown of a nuclear power plant next year. Some are concerned about
the possibility Lithuania will have to rely more on Russia for energy.
