Former United Nations' secretary-general Kofi Annan says wealthy nations, rattled by the global economic crisis, are reneging on commitments to help feed millions of hungry people in the developing world.
Mr. Annan spoke at a global conference on hunger in Dublin. He said 10-thousand children across the developing world will die today (Thursday) alone from malnutrition. He warned that the food crisis should be accorded the same urgency as a failing bank.
He said wealthy countries and international lenders are continuing to inject hundreds of billions of dollars into the global economy, while the world's hungry continue to starve.
In a message to the conference, Pope Benedict linked the spread of global hunger to a the preoccupation of rich countries with what he says is push for material goods.
