태국의 솜차이 옹사왓 총리는 지난 주 방콕에서 폭력적인 반정부 시위가 치명적인 시위로 돌발한 뒤에 나온 반정부 측의 총리직 사임 요구를 일축했습니다.
솜차이 총리는 12일 전국에 방영된 텔레비전 연설을 통해 불과 2주 전에 오른 총리직을 사임한다고 해서 문제가 해결되는 것은 아니라고 말했습니다.
방콕에서는 경찰이 반정부 시위대를 해체시키려했던 지난 7일 시위자 2명이 사망하고 400여명이 다치는 등 치명적인 폭력사태가 발생했습니다.
반정부 지도자들은 13일 방콕시내 경찰 본부 밖에서 벌일 계획이었던 시위는 사망한 시위자 2명의 장례식을 위해 연기됐다고 밝혔습니다.
이들 반정부 시위자는 솜차이 총리가 축출된 탁신 치나왓 총리의 대리인에 불과하다고 비난하면서 사임할 것을 요구하고 있습니다. 솜차이 총리는 탁신 전 총리의 처남입니다.

Thai Prime Minister Somchai
Wongsawat has rejected opposition demands for his resignation after a violent
protest in Bangkok turned deadly this past week.
In a nationally televised address today (Sunday), Mr. Somchai said
resigning from the post he assumed only two weeks ago (on September 25th)
would not solve Thailand's problems.
Violence erupted in Bangkok last Tuesday when Thai police tried to break up an
anti-government protest. Two protesters were killed and more than 400 people
were injured.
Opposition leaders say a protest they planned to hold outside Bangkok's police
headquarters on Monday has been postponed out of respect for the funerals of
the two activists.
The protesters have demanded Mr. Somchai step down, accusing him of being of
proxy of deposed Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Mr. Somchai is a
brother-in-law of Mr. Thaksin.
The Thai military ousted Mr. Thaksin in 2006 for alleged corruption and misuse
of power.
