미국은 이라크, 바그다드수도권의 5만 명 이상 전투원들에 대한 지원 책임을 이라크에 넘길 것이라고 로이드 오스틴 이라크 주둔 미군 중장이 밝혔습니다.
오스틴 중장은 22일 현재 미국으로 부터 무기류 등을 지원 받고 있는 전투원들의 봉급을 앞으로 이라크 정부가 지불할 것이라고 말했습니다. 대부분 수니파들인 이들 전투원들은 시아파 주도의 정부에서 안보와 민간 부문에 흡수될 예정입니다.
이들은 이라크 보안병력인 이른바 '이라크의 아들' 소속으로 이라크내 알-카에다 테러단체에 등을 돌리면서 폭력을 줄이는데 기여한 공로를 인정받고 있습니다.

A top American commander says the U.S. will transfer
responsibility for the support of more than 50-thousand fighters in Baghdad
province -- most of them Sunni -- to Iraq.
General Lloyd Austin said today (Monday) the Iraqi government will pay
the salaries of the men, currently armed and supported by the U.S., as they are
absorbed into security and civilian jobs in the Shi'ite-led government.
The men are members of the Sons of Iraq, credited with helping lower the
violence in the nation by turning against al-Qaida in Iraq insurgents.
During a videoconference with reporters from Baghdad, Austin also said that
despite security gains in Anbar province, he does not predict further drawdowns
in U.S. forces there. The U.S. handed control of the province to Iraq three
weeks ago.
